Durham Photonics was spun out of Durham University in June 2007 and is based in Durham's business incubation centre.
Founded on technology developed by Professors Martyn Chamberlain and Nick Zinovyev and Dr John Fletcher it exploits intellectual property in terahertz technology and in image processing developed at Durham.
In life sciences, there is an increasing demand for new techniques that can help us understand and manipulate biological systems at the molecular level.
And, with the continuing drive for reducing feature sizes and increasing performance in semiconductor technology, new measurement methods are needed to characterise structures at the nanometre scale. These are just a two of the developments that are driving the demand for new nano-scale measurement technologies. The Durham Photonics approach combines terahertz spectroscopy and advanced imaging with proprietary signal processing, producing a Terahertz Microscope with the potential to resolve a large number of practical spectroscopic problems, in emerging application fields such as nanotechnologies, pharmaceuticals, biomedical technologies, as well as in the more traditional industries.
